Landing ships capable of launching tanks and hundreds of troops have been spotted off the coast of Ukraine. A Russian invasion of Ukraine’s third-largest city could open a corridor to Kiev from the south for Russian troops to pass.
In this regard, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense warned that strike forces could prepare for a possible attack following the sighting of Russian personnel in the Black Sea heading to Odessa.
“In the waters of the Black Sea, we observed the landing detachment of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, consisting of four large landing craft accompanied by three rocket ships, advancing towards Odessa,” read a statement issued by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. Daily StarFriday (4/3/2022).
A landing craft spotted in the waters was identified as the Pyotr Morgunov, which is capable of carrying attack helicopters, 13 tanks or 36 infantry vehicles along with 300 troops.
Reports also indicate that an Estonian cargo ship that was apparently captured and used by the Russian navy as shield during the invasion sank after the explosion.
