“Kazakhstan Skating Union did not apply for the performances of figure skater Sofya Samodelkina for the national team of Kazakhstan. The athlete changed her citizenship on her own. The issues of granting citizenship of Kazakhstan are handled by the Ministry of Internal Affairs,” the statement says.
The organization said that if citizenship is granted, then an individual has equal rights and opportunities and has the right to apply for participation in performances as part of the national team. “However, this issue is not currently being considered by the union,” the press service explained.
The 16-year-old athlete trained in Moscow under the guidance of Svetlana Sokolovskaya. In September 2021, the figure skater became the silver medalist of the junior Grand Prix series. Last season, Sofia won the Russian Grand Prix in Samara and was 11th in the Russian Championship.
