One of the skaters participating in the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne received serious injuries when falling from a height.
The incident occurred on January 7 at a ceremony rehearsal.
“A 35-year-old Russian skater living in Germany fell from a height of 15 feet (4.57 m – approx. Sports.ru) on an ice rink.
During the performance, the skater rose in height on a system of metal rings connected by a cable that was fixed to the ceiling of the arena.
For the reason to be established by the investigation, she suddenly lost her balance and fell onto the ice from a height of about 15 feet. Seriously injured, she was taken to the University Hospital of Lausanne by ambulance.
Her life is in danger. The prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal case, ”The Sun quoted the police as saying.
Lausanne Police Spokeswoman Olivia Katrutstsola statedthat there was no malfunction in the system and the incident occurred due to a loss of balance by the athlete herself.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made an official statement about what happened.
“The IOC and Lausanne 2020 are saddened by the news of an accident during a rehearsal for the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne.
A participant in the ceremony suffered as a result of the incident at the Voduaz Arena and was taken to the Voduaz Central University Hospital, where she is being treated.
The IOC and Lausanne 2020 wish the performer a speedy and complete recovery, ”the IOC website says.
