The Russian Figure Skating Championship ends in Chelyabinsk with demonstration performances. Before the start of the gala show, the winners and runners-up of the tournament received medals, but the award ceremony was not without embarrassment.

Only the champion and vice-champion came forward to collect the men’s awards, but the bronze medalist never appeared on the podium.

“Overall I am satisfied”

Gumennik made a splash on Friday with an incredible performance in his free skate. Three perfectly executed quadruple jumps and amazing skating delighted the audience. The judges also appreciated the performance of the St. Petersburg figure skater, giving him a fantastic 200.58 points – the best result among men.

With such scores, one can fight for medals at the World Championships, but a weak performance in the short program did not allow Peter to rise above third place at the tournament in Chelyabinsk – a step back compared to last year. But Gumennik was happy with this result.

– Satisfied. I won the free skate, last time the short one. All that remains is to win by the sum of the programs. I could have skated better, but again, overall I’m happy. Many people competed for a medal. Many people fall; some can skate better, some worse. I could take any place,” Match TV quotes Gumennik as saying.

“He felt bad”

December 24 is the final day of the Russian Championship. Before the demonstration performances at the arena in Chelyabinsk, the athletes were awarded their well-deserved medals. Men were awarded after dance duets. Three sets of awards were brought out onto the carpet.

First, Evgeniy Semenenko climbed to the podium, followed by Vladislav Dikidzhi. Then the announcer announced Goosebumps. There was loud applause in the stands, but the bronze medalist never came out. The place on the pedestal was left empty.

“For medical reasons, he cannot take part in the ceremony,” the announcer explained the reason for the skater’s absence.

The absence of Gumennik on the podium looked very strange, because his participation in demonstration performances was soon announced. The situation was clarified by the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR).

“After training, he felt unwell, we were waiting for the doctor to give an opinion. After that, it was decided that he would participate (in gala performances), – the press service of the FFKKR commented on the situation with Gumennik.

The federation did not name specific health problems, but it is very good that nothing serious happened to the 21-year-old skater. And after a couple of hours, Petya performed a demonstration number with courage. True, this only added to the questions. What kind of problems could there be that you can skate with, but you can’t go out and get a medal?
