More than three thousand residents of the Russian city of Belgorod are allowed to return home on Saturday. On Thursday, the city was hit by a Russian fighter jet. Two women were injured and several buildings damaged. An unexploded explosive device was also discovered.
The evacuees live in the area hit by the bomb from the Russian plane. At least seventeen apartment complexes were evacuated. Authorities later reported that another unexploded bomb had been found. That was also the reason for the large-scale evacuation.
The explosive that hit Belgorod has been removed. According to local authorities, the city was hit by a weapon from a Sukhoi SU-34. That’s a supersonic fighter-bomber. It is unclear whether the later discovered second bomb came from the same aircraft.
The bombing caused a huge explosion. A crater with a diameter of 20 meters was created.
Belgorod is close to the border with Ukraine. It has been the target of Ukrainian attacks several times. Weapons and ammunition of the Russian troops are stored in the city, among other things.
Russia has carried out new airstrikes in recent days. For example, the Ukrainian capital Kyiv was under fire again for the first time in almost a month.
