There has so far been no official Russian comment after Hungary’s National Assembly finally agreed to let the Swedes into the alliance. Late Tuesday evening, however, the Russian embassy in Stockholm posted a long and apparently threatening message on Telegram.

Russia will introduce political and military-technical countermeasures to minimize the threat to national security. The concrete content of the measures depends on how extensive Sweden’s integration into NATO will be and the eventual deployment of NATO forces, weapons and combat materiel in the country, writes the embassy.

Experts interpret “military technical measures” such as the relocation of military departments and infrastructure as well as several exercises.

The embassy says it is up to Sweden if they want to join NATO, but:

– At the same time, the country’s entry into a military alliance that is hostile to Russia will have negative consequences for the stability of Northern Europe and around the Baltic Sea, which remains our common area.

Ambassador Viktor Tatarintsev has previously said that Sweden will become a legitimate target if the country joins NATO.
