The Civil and Military Administration in Kiev announced, on Saturday, that it had completely repelled, during the night, a new attack launched by Russian marches on the Ukrainian capital, which led to the fall of debris in Kiev, without recording injuries at this stage.
“Last night, the aggressor carried out another major attack with drones,” Sergey Popko, the head of the Kiev civil and military administration, wrote on Telegram.
He added, “The city’s air defenses shot down all the air targets that were detected,” indicating that they were “Shahid” drones, according to preliminary information.
He pointed out that Kiev “was not subjected to any raids,” but debris that fell on the capital caused a fire to break out on the roof of a residential building in the Dnipro region, and it was extinguished without any injuries.
Earlier, the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on Telegram that there was “a fire on the roof of a nine-storey building in a residential complex in the Dnipro region,” adding that there was no information about casualties.
Sergei Popko said the fire was caused by “falling debris”, calling on residents to take cover.
Popko talked about the fall of more debris in several streets in the Darnitsky and Solomyansky regions, explaining that information about potential damage and losses is being verified.
At 00:45 (21:45 GMT Friday), the Ukrainian army announced that Shahed drones were heading towards the Kiev region.
The authorities reported explosions there, as well as in Chernigov (central north) and Mariupol (southeast).
The military noted that air defense systems are active in the Kiev and Chernigov regions.
Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant
In the context, Russian forces have in recent weeks strengthened their defensive positions in and around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the south of the country, before an expected counterattack in the region.
Russian forces have had firing positions over some of the nuclear plant buildings for months.
The nets were set up in what is likely to be an obstacle to the drones.
The actions described by two Ukrainian employees of the station and two other residents of the city of Innerhodar highlight the risks posed by the war to the security of the facility.
The Russian company that operates the plant said any possible military action by Ukraine posed a threat to nuclear safety and that the plant’s equipment was being maintained as required. Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency and Russia’s Defense Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.
The International Atomic Energy Agency says that the military presence and activity is increasing in the region, which highlights the need for urgent action.
The agency has been warning for months of the danger of a major accident at the station.
Four diplomats told Reuters that the agency plans to bring to the United Nations Security Council an agreement between Russia and Ukraine later this month aimed at protecting the facility.
