Russian Drone Strike in Ukraine Kills 10, President Calls for Boost in Air Defenses
Tragedy struck Ukraine on Saturday when a Russian drone strike destroyed an apartment block in the southern port city of Odesa, resulting in the death of 10 people. The death toll rose to 10 on Sunday when rescue workers discovered the body of a third child and the child’s mother in the rubble. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Western allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses in response to the deadly attack.
The Ukrainian interior ministry shared a heartbreaking account of the incident, stating that the mother had tried to shield her 8-month-old child with her own body in an attempt to save them. They were found in a firm embrace, highlighting the devastating impact of the strike on innocent lives.
Authorities initially reported that one young baby was among those killed, with falling debris from an Iranian-made drone hitting the apartment building. However, later reports confirmed that a second child had also died in the attack. President Zelenskyy expressed his condolences and urged Kyiv’s Western partners to provide additional air defense systems. He emphasized that delays in delivering necessary weapons and air defense systems have resulted in such tragic losses.
The attack in Odesa has left seven other people injured, including a 3-year-old girl. Rescue workers are continuing their efforts to search for four more individuals who may still be trapped in the rubble. The local governor, Oleh Kiper, has stated that a day of mourning will be observed for the victims.
In a disturbing development, reports emerged of explosions at an oil depot in Russian-occupied Crimea. Local pro-Kyiv Telegram news channels shared videos showing explosions lighting up the night sky near Feodosia, a coastal town in northeastern Crimea. An anti-Russian underground group called Atesh claimed responsibility for the blasts, alleging that they had destroyed a pipeline and caused significant damage. However, Kyiv authorities have not yet acknowledged or commented on these claims.
Meanwhile, in Moscow, China’s special envoy on Ukraine, Li Hui, held talks with senior Russian diplomats. The discussions focused on finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Li’s visit comes as Kyiv seeks Beijing’s involvement in peace talks organized by Switzerland. China maintains close ties with Russia but claims to be neutral in the conflict.
The recent drone strike in Ukraine has once again highlighted the urgent need for bolstering air defenses. President Zelenskyy’s call for support from Western allies underscores the gravity of the situation and the importance of international cooperation in ensuring the safety and security of Ukraine’s people. As the search for survivors continues and investigations into the attack unfold, it is crucial for the international community to stand united against such acts of violence and work towards a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
