Russian Director Alexander Sokurov Retirement after Film Ban: Exclusive Interview

Director Alexander Sokurov announced his retirement from his professional career after his film “Fairy Tale” was banned. This is what he’s talking about said in a comment to News.ru.

“I’m not working on new projects, now I won’t be able to shoot and show films in Russia. “My professional career, it seems to me, is over because of this ban and refusal of distribution,” said the director.

Later he confirmed this is in a conversation with RBC.

“Well, where should I go now? What should I do? I am a Russian person, I have a Russian passport. Why should I realize my business abroad? Why should I leave and not them? – said Sokurov.

The premiere of Alexander Sokurov’s film “The Tale” took place at the Locarno Film Festival. The main characters of the film are Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini and Churchill, who meet in hell.

In October 2023, the Russian Ministry of Culture banned the screening of the film at the international festival “Karo.Art”, and then refused to issue a distribution certificate for “Fairy Tale”.

On December 3, journalist Ksenia Sobchak posted Sokurov’s film on her YouTube channel.
