First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Konstantin Zatulin said on the radio station “Moscow Speaks” the day before, January 30, that Russian diplomatic workers “should not be subjected to this.”
Thus he commented on the words of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova at a briefing that there are no facts of forced expulsion of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh.
“An idiot in Yerevan desecrated the monument to the Children of Siege Leningrad. At the same time, as the basis for this, he cited the words of Maria Zakharova about Nagorno-Karabakh. Maria Zakharova said that we have not seen documents from international organizations that confirm that ethnic cleansing was carried out in Nagorno-Karabakh. And this scoundrel took this as a reason for his action, saying that we did not see the documents, that there was a blockade in Leningrad,” the Russian parliamentarian was indignant.
According to him, “a scoundrel remains a scoundrel and a scoundrel, especially when it comes to the monument to besieged Leningrad or the monument to the victims of the Great Patriotic War.”
“On the other hand, and on the part of our diplomatic representatives, to say things like that we don’t know that there was ethnic cleansing there after 120 thousand people left there before our eyes is, at a minimum, unreasonable. There is no need to expose yourself and thus comment on things that are obvious to everyone,” Zatulin emphasized.
The day before it became known that after Zakharova’s words, a resident of Yerevan staged a pogrom at the memorial to the Children of the Siege of Leningrad in a Yerevan park. According to media reports, he did this in response to the said statement by a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Russian Embassy in Armenia called the desecration of wreaths at the monument to the Children of the Siege of Leningrad in Yerevan a cynical provocation. A statement issued last Tuesday said that such actions can hardly be regarded as anything other than an expression of open outrage against the memory of the victims of this tragedy and the heroes who defended the city.
Investigative committees of Armenia and Russia on the actions of a citizen of the Transcaucasian republic Samvela Shirinyana criminal cases were opened.
Let us recall that on September 19 last year, Azerbaijan announced an “anti-terrorist operation” in Nagorno-Karabakh, having previously kept the population of the unrecognized republic in an almost 10-month blockade (since December 12, 2022). During the day of fighting, the Karabakh side lost about two hundred people killed and more than 400 wounded, several thousand civilians were evacuated from the battle zone, accompanied by Russian peacekeepers. More than one hundred thousand Karabakh Armenians then rushed along the Lachin corridor towards Armenia. Azerbaijan lost 204 soldiers and officers killed, including 13 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic, and more than 500 wounded. The Russian peacekeeping contingent also suffered losses – six Russian servicemen were killed.
