This was stated on Sunday by the head of the Russian delegation to the negotiations in Vienna on military security and arms control, Konstantin Gavrilov, on the YouTube channel “Isolent Live”.
“It is out of the question. It is simply impossible de facto,” the diplomat said in response to a relevant question. He pointed to the failure of similar measures taken against Iran.
“Exclude Russia from oil, gas and everything. Are they laughing?” Gavrilov noted with irony.
“Immediately it became clear. It is called like this: “Fear. Oh, we weren’t scared – but then it won’t happen.”
He added that the authors of such threats against Russia in the West remind him of “an animal that eats a cactus that stings but continues.”
On January 17, the German newspaper Handelsblatt, citing sources in the German government, reported that the US and EU authorities were allegedly no longer considering the possibility of excluding Russia from SWIFT. At the same time, it was stated that negotiations between the EU and the US are now aimed at developing sanctions against major Russian banks.
Asked for comment on Handelsblatt’s announcement, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that an option had not been ruled out.
