Russian Digital Platforms General Director Announces Development of Domestic iOS App Store “NashStore” Following EU Third-Party Store Approval

General Director of ANO Digital Platforms Arseny Shcheltsin in conversation with “Izvestia” reported that the department is developing a domestic application store NashStore for iOS.

Shcheltsin announced plans for “Digital Platforms” after Apple allowed third-party stores for iOS in the EU. The head of the organization believes that regional restrictions can be circumvented if such stores do not become available in the Russian Federation.

In particular, when activating an iOS device, users always select the country where the gadget will be used. And if a person activates an iPhone in the EU, but selects the country “Russia,” then he is shown a screen from the Russian list of applications for pre-installation, although these standards do not apply in the European Union. Exactly the same story is possible with marketplaces – in order for them to work in the Russian Federation, you will need to select one of the European countries as a region.

Izvestia’s interlocutors note that this method will entail a number of restrictions. For example, to download applications for the Russian Federation, you will have to go into the settings, and some – for example, music or movies in Russian applications – may not work when changing the region.

Alternative stores for iOS will appear in the EU from March after the release of iOS 17.4.
