Russian Detective Pardoned in Anna Politkovskaya Murder Case

The former Russian detective Sergey Khadzhikurbanovwho was convicted of the 2006 murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskayawas pardoned, his lawyer told AFP.

“As a special forces fighter, he was invited to sign a contract for participation in the special military operation in Ukraine. When the contract expired, he was pardoned by presidential decree,” said his lawyer Alexei Mikhalchik.

On October 7, 2006, the Russian journalist was shot dead in the elevator of her apartment building in the center of Moscow. She was known for her opposition to the conflict in Chechnya and her criticism of Putin.

The ex-policeman Sergey Khadzhikurbanov was sentenced to spend 20 years in a penal colonyand the sentences of Ibrahim and Jabrail Mahmudovi (brothers of the perpetrator Rustam) are, respectively, 12 and 14 years of imprisonment.
