Destroyer Russia shoo and threaten to crash warship Navy United States of America breaking through the Moscow region in Pacific waters, Tuesday (24/11).
The Russian Ministry of Defense said the USS John S. McCain, a guided missile destroyer, was breaching Russian territory by moving two kilometers beyond the maritime border into Peter Bay.
According to Russia, the US ship had operated illegally in the Sea of Japan and was immediately tracked by the Moscow Navy.
“The Admiral Vinogradov, an anti-submarine destroyer in Russia’s Pacific Fleet, sent a warning to the US ship and threatened to use a raid maneuver to drive the intruders out of its territorial waters,” said a Russian Defense Ministry statement. AFP.
After being warned, the US ship immediately returned to neutral waters, but was kept under surveillance.
Meanwhile the US Pacific Fleet stated that it had done nothing wrong. The US Pacific Fleet said the USS John S. McCain was sailing legally around Peter Bay.
“USS John S. McCain has asserted navigation rights in the region in opposition to Russia’s excessive maritime claims”.
The territory has been in dispute since 1984, when the Soviet Union declared it part of its waters, a claim Russia has maintained until now.
Such incidents are rare and are a sign of continuing post-Cold War tensions between Russia and the United States.
Last year the two countries accused each other of dangerous maneuvers after The Admiral Vinogradov nearly collided with USS Chancellorsville in the East China Sea.
