Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Timur Ivanov Arrested for Bribery: Kremlin Informed, Putin Reacts

The Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Timur Ivanov has been arrested on suspicion of accepting a bribe, the press service of the Investigative Committee of Russia announced. called from TASS.

“On suspicion of having committed an offense under para. 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (taking a bribe), Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Timur Vladimirovich Ivanov was detained,” said the brief press release.

President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu were informed about the detention of the deputy defense minister, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

As deputy minister, Timur Ivanov was responsible for organizing property management, soldiers’ quarters, housing and medical insurance. Under his supervision was the planning of procurement of goods, construction works and services within the government’s defense procurement framework. He was also responsible for engineering studies, architectural and structural design, construction, reconstruction and overhaul of Ministry of Defense facilities.

49-year-old Timur Ivanov was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense by presidential decree in May 2016. Before that, from 2013 to 2016, he was the general director of Oboronstroy, under the Ministry of Defense, specializing in construction of housing for the military, as well as important military and strategic facilities. Ivanov is included in the rating Forbes “The Richest Security Officers in Russia – 2019” with a family income for 2018 of 136.7 million rubles.

Before joining the Ministry of Defense in May-November 2012, Timur Ivanov was the Deputy Prime Minister of the Moscow Region. During this time, the governor of the Moscow region was Sergei Shoigu. Before that, Timur Ivanov worked in the energy industry: in the department for the construction of nuclear facilities at the Ministry of Atomic Energy, he was the vice-president of “Atomstroyexport”, a member of the Board of Directors of Inter RAO UES, and was the head of the Russian Energy Group at the Ministry of Energy.
