The day before, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that even after 21 months of war, the Kremlin’s goals have not changed. Moreover, Moscow demands Kyiv to capitulate and recognize new borders. There was no hint from her lips about sitting down at the negotiating table.
Analysts from Institute for the Study of War decided to analyze Zakharova’s words.
In an interview with France Press on December 9, she said that the West must stop “pumping” Ukraine with weapons.
Zakharova again reminded everyone that The main goal of the “SVO” is “demilitarization”, “denazification” and “saving the Russians” living in Ukraine.
By “denazification,” the Kremlin means the removal of Zelensky from the post of president and the election of someone who will be loyal to Russia. “Demilitarization” implies that Ukraine will forever be under the complete control of the Russian Federation.
Zakharova’s words suggest that the Kremlin’s goals have not changed since February 24, 2022.
ISW continues to believe that Russia does not intend to conduct serious negotiations with Ukraine in good faith, and negotiations on Russian terms are tantamount to a complete capitulation of Ukraine and the West.
Zakharova demands that Kyiv recognize the entire Donbass, as well as the occupied parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as the Russian Federation.
Moreover, the Kremlin is proposing that Kyiv withdraw the army from those territories, parts of which are already under the Russian Federation: Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
At the same time, the occupiers are now fighting not only in the Donbass and Zaporozhye direction, but also in the Kharkov region, which means the Kremlin’s plans are far-reaching, since Zakharova has not yet said anything about the territory of the Kharkov region.
