Russian Defense Ministry Destroys 38 Ukrainian Drones Over Crimea, Traffic Disruption Reported

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that Russian air defense systems destroyed all 38 drones launched by Ukraine over the Crimean peninsula early on Sunday.

The Russian announcement came after reports on Ukrainian and Russian social media that there were powerful explosions in the port of Feodosia.

In its statement published on the Telegram application, the Russian Ministry of Defense did not mention whether there were any damages or losses.

Traffic disruption near Feodosia

Russian officials in Crimea had previously said that road traffic near Feodosia had been severely disrupted.

Russian-appointed officials in Crimea said on the Telegram app that traffic on the bridge connecting Crimea to mainland Russia was halted for two hours before resuming around 01:40 GMT.

Russian and Ukrainian social media reported residents of Feodosia that they heard strong explosions in the seaport and oil depot area at around 2 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Moscow is counting on its Black Sea fleet

Moscow is using its Black Sea fleet to launch long-range strikes on Ukraine. But for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the waters connected to the Mediterranean are also an important springboard for projecting power in the Middle East and Europe.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his forces succeeded in reducing Moscow’s military power in the Black Sea, which he said, with greater support from Kiev’s allies, could lead to his country’s eventual victory over Russia.

Last Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had repelled an attempt to land special forces from Kiev in areas occupied by Moscow Southern Ukraineconfirming the elimination of “up to 25 soldiers” and the capture of one soldier.
