Russian Defense Committee Members propose Doubling Mandatory Service Period to Two Years

First, the doubling of the mandatory service period was proposed by the member of the State Duma, Lieutenant General Andrejs Gurulevs, who works in the defense committee.

“Mandatory service should last two years, then the problem with the number of conscripts and the quality of the mobilized resource would be solved,” Gurulevs wrote on his Telegram channel on Sunday. “A year of service does not make a prepared soldier, but various program expansions will not help,” he added.

Later, Viktors Sobolevs, who is also a member of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, came up with the same proposal. He expressed the opinion that the issue of extending the duration of compulsory service has been relevant for a long time.

Sobolevs believes that mandatory service should last at least one and a half years, ideally two years.

On December 1, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed an order according to which the numerical composition of the Russian army is increased by 170,000 people. This means that the Russian army will have a total of 2,209,130 people, including 1,320,000 soldiers.
