Russian dancer Vladimir Shklyarov dies at 39 – Drops from 5th –

The accomplished Russian ballet dancer Vladimir Shklyarov died at the age of 39 after falling from the fifth floor of a building, Anna Kasatkina, spokeswoman for the Mariinsky Theater, told the Fontanka news agency.

According to Kasatkina, Shklyarov was taking pain medication for a back injury and was scheduled to undergo spinal surgery today (11/18).

A Giardian publication says that although a federal investigation has been launched to investigate the dancer’s death, the “preliminary cause” has been ruled an accident, Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Born in St Petersburg in 1985, Shklyarov joined the Mariinsky Theater in 2003 and became its principal dancer – the highest position in a ballet troupe – in 2011. The company called his death a “tremendous loss”.

During his 20-year career, Shklyarov starred in productions of Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote and Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice in Wonderland. He has appeared around the world, including with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera House in London.

“Our condolences to the artist’s family, to his loved ones, to his friends and to all the numerous admirers of his work and talent … He forever wrote his name in the history of world ballet,” it said.
