The Russian court has ordered the arrest of Ksenia Fadeeva, an associate of the imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is accused of creating an “extremist organization”, Navalny’s team announced on Monday.
Until now, Fadeeva was under house arrest.
Fadeyeva is a former deputy of the Siberian city of Tomsk, who was included in Russia’s list of “terrorists” in January 2022. Fadeeva also headed Navalny’s political office in Tomsk.
In 2021, Navalny’s political offices were recognized as “extremist organizations”, which in turn meant that office workers, volunteers and supporters faced criminal prosecution. Many of Navalny’s associates left Russia, but Fadeeva refused to flee and was detained in December 2021. If convicted, she faces up to 12 years in prison.
“Ksenia Fadeeva was sent to prison,” Navalny’s team announced on social media.
The judge in Fadeeva’s case supported the prosecutor’s office, which claims that the house arrest was too mild, said Fadeeva’s colleague Andrejs Fatejevs.
Navalny’s team said Fadeeva led an investigation into corruption in the region, shed light on societal problems and engaged in legitimate political activities.
