A guest performance by Russian conductor Tugan Sochiyev with the New York Philharmonic has been canceled due to the war in Ukraine.
the essentials in brief
- “In view of the current global situation and after discussions with Tugan Sochiyev”, this decision was made “together”, the New York Philharmonic announced on Friday.
The guest performance was planned between March 31st and April 2nd. “The Philharmonic are very much looking forward to welcoming him next season.” In his place, Anna Rakitina, also Russian and deputy conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will make her debut with the New York Philharmonic.
Sochiyev had previously resigned as chief conductor of Moscow’s world-renowned Bolshoi Theater and music director of the national orchestra at the Capitole Opera House in Toulouse, France, as a result of the war. Having been forced to make the “unacceptable choice” between his beloved Russian and French musicians, he had decided to give up both musical directors, he said.
In addition to Sochiyev, other Russian musicians have come under pressure to declare themselves publicly since the Russian invasion of Ukraine – including the conductor Valeri Gergiyev and the star soprano Anna Netrebko.
