Russian Composer Gennady Gladkov, Known for “The Bremen Town Musicians,” Passes Away at 88

Gladkov was born on February 18, 1935 into a family of musicians. He graduated from a chemical technical school, and later from the theoretical department of the music school at the Moscow State Conservatory. Tchaikovsky, where he studied composing music under the direction of Grigory Frid. In 1966, Gladkov graduated from graduate school at the Moscow Conservatory. Until 1971, he was engaged in teaching and taught classes, including at the Moscow Conservatory.

His works include music for popular films, TV series and cartoons. In particular, he wrote music for the cartoons “Baby and Carlson”, “Well, Just Wait!”, “38 Parrots”, “Dot, Dot, Comma”, etc. In addition, among his works is music for the films “Gentlemen of Fortune” , “12 Chairs”, “Dog in the Manger”, etc. His popularity was brought to him by his work on the musical cartoon “The Bremen Town Musicians” (1969) and its sequel “In the Footsteps of the Bremen Town Musicians” (1973), in which he performed the part Stupid king. In total, his music appears in more than 110 films.

In 2002, Gladkov was recognized as a People’s Artist of Russia; in 2011, for many years of creative activity and contribution to the development of domestic musical art, he was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, IV degree. In addition, Gladkov was the winner of two Nika prizes from the Russian Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
