The commander of the pro-Russian militia in Donetsk, Alexander Khodakovsky, stressed in recent interviews on Russian state television that the use of nuclear weapons was the only way for Moscow to win the war. In the interview, Khodakovsky said that the Russian military authorities realized their resources “had limits”. He indicated that Russia could use nuclear weapons to defeat Ukraine.
“Everyone realized that the next escalation might just be a phase of nuclear war,” Khodakovsky said in the interview.
Khodakovsky said Russia could deploy nuclear weapons if the NATO alliance violates “certain limits” and becomes “directly involved” in a military conflict. So far, Western countries have limited their involvement in the war by providing humanitarian and military support to Ukraine, as the option to send troops would clearly have escalated the war.
