Russian citizen tries to rescue passengers from mandatory quarantine by giving a bribe to a border guard

On Sunday, June 28, during a border check of persons crossing the state border, border guards refused entry to Latvia to a Ukrainian citizen born in 1969, as the movement of persons and vehicles through the European Union’s external border crossing points has been banned since March 17 this year. Upon receiving the refusal of entry, the Ukrainian citizen presented the MTPL policy to the border guards with a 50 euro banknote inserted in it.

The man gave a bribe to cross the border.

On the holiday week, June 22, during a border check, the border guards found a Russian citizen born in 1987 entering Latvia, who offered to pay the border guards if they did not put border crossing stamps in the passports of male passengers, so that passengers in Austria would not be quarantined for 14 days.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against both persons for bribery under Section 323, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law, while in Daugavpils Prosecutor’s Office persons have been held criminally liable by concluding an agreement with a prosecutor on guilt and sentencing – in the case of a Ukrainian citizen – temporary imprisonment for two months. a fine of 10 minimum monthly salaries, ie 4,300 euros. Penalties will take effect within 10 days.

Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine of ten to two thousand minimum wages set by the Republic of Latvia in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law.
