The Russian-language media commented on the killing of a Russian citizen by a shark on an Egyptian beach, where the official Russian RIA Novosti agency said that the shark that caused the death of a Russian was caught in Hurghada, Egypt, quoting local Egyptian sources.
The agency stated that the man who died in Hurghada as a result of a shark attack was not a tourist. He had lived permanently in Egypt, where the victim’s family had bought an apartment and had been living in the British resort complex in Hurghada for several months.
After the shark attack, the Red Sea governorate authorities ordered the closure of all Hurghada beaches.
The accident occurred Thursday afternoon near Dream Beach in the center of Hurghada.
The agency confirmed that the Consulate General of the Russian Federation is in constant contact with the police and the National Security Service in the Red Sea province.
Meanwhile, Jamal Juma, Secretary-General of the Arab Society for the Protection of Wildlife, told RIA Novosti that attacking a person is not a natural behavior for a shark. He noted that predatory fish can be aroused by vacationers feeding marine life from tourist boats.
On the other hand, many Russian-speaking websites commented on the accident, some of which revealed that the Russian citizen was devoured by the shark in front of his father’s eyes, while one of the sites commented that the accident occurred and no one helped the victim, as all the tourists watched the accident and filmed the victim while the shark devoured her.
The Egyptian police said that the dead man was 23 years old, Vladimir Popov, from the Arkhangelsk region in Russia.
