Ella Pamfilova, the chairwoman of the Russian Central Election Commission, said that if the situation in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian territories worsens, the Russian authorities may postpone the elections for governors and regional parliaments scheduled for September this year, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA .
Russia controls about a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, including the Crimean peninsula, which it annexed in 2014, as well as parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, parts of which Russian forces established control after invading Ukraine in February last year.
According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions are part of Russia after Moscow unilaterally annexed them last year.
For Ukraine and its allies, the unilateral annexation of the four Ukrainian regions is illegal and invalid. Kiev’s position is that Russian forces should withdraw from the Ukrainian territories they occupy.
“Since the situation is really difficult, anything can happen,” Ella Pamfilova said at a meeting with Putin in the Kremlin.
“If unforeseen circumstances arise and we see that there is a serious danger to the lives and health of residents, then we will have the right to postpone these elections in a certain area,” she said, to which the Russian president replied: “I understand.”
On September 10 of this year, it is planned to hold elections in Russia for heads of subjects of the Russian Federation, as well as for deputies in regional legislative bodies.
