Russian Central Election Commission Adopts Resolution for Presidential Elections in Annexed Ukrainian Territories

The Central Election Commission of Russia adopted a resolution according to which the Russian presidential elections in March 2024 will be held in the annexed territories of Ukraine, where martial law has been introduced. Interfax reports this.

The decision was made unanimously at a commission meeting on December 11.

In the CEC telegram channel it saysthat the commission held consultations with representatives of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the FSB, as well as the leadership of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR and the Russian-controlled parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

“All parties to the consultations consider it possible to hold elections of the head of state on the territory of these constituent entities of the Russian Federation,” the CEC said.

The Russian presidential elections will take place over three days, from March 15 to 17, 2024.

The head of the Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, said that it is planned to use two “additional forms of voting” within the borders with Ukraine in the Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk regions, as well as in the annexed territories. One of the forms is voting in neighborhood areas and other places outside polling stations. The second is “voting by groups of voters who live in populated areas and other places where there are no voting premises, and with which transport communication is difficult.” How clarified Pamfilova, we are talking about voting points on buses.

On October 19, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree introducing martial law in the annexed territories of Ukraine.
