Russian Aviation Industry Faces Crisis as Dangerous Incidents Triple Amid Ukraine Invasion

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the number of dangerous incidents in Russian airspace has tripled. Also on Monday, a case was recorded when the Boeing 737 plane of the Aeroflot airline company, which was on its way from Moscow to Yerevan, was forced to make an emergency landing right there at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.

In the first half of 2022, the aviation industry was one of the first to feel the impact of Western sanctions. Because of this, airlines cannot get enough spare parts to keep their planes in working order.

Due to sanctions, Russian airlines are looking for spare parts on the black market, or they are literally being removed from idle planes. Since these parts are of low quality and do not meet safety standards, more and more accidents are happening.

According to “Newsweek” and the independent Russian publication “Novaya Gazeta. Europe” data, in 2023 there have already been 180 incidents involving Russian aircraft. For comparison – 2018-2022. In 2018, there were only 55 incidents per year on average, but last year this figure was 60.

In addition, during the first eight days of December alone, 11 incidents involving civil aviation aircraft were recorded in Russia, “Kyiv Independent” reports.
