China’s expansion into the Russian automobile market, from which all global manufacturers left because of the war in Ukraine, has resulted in problems for Russians. Owners of Chinese cars are faced with a lack of parts for repairs and are forced to wait from 3 to 5 months for them to be delivered to the country. told Izvestia representatives of the automotive industry.
We are talking about large spare parts: gearboxes, rear fenders, bodies and interior elements. The shortage primarily affects brands that have recently been sold in Russia: Changan, Li, Zeekr, FAW and BYD. The situation is slightly better with Chery, Geely and Haval.
“They haven’t been able to fix my car for five months now, because the service center that is supposed to do it doesn’t have the necessary parts,” said the owner of Changan UNI-V. She bought a car from an official dealer in July 2023 for 2.7 million rubles. However, the dealer cannot help with car repairs.
“There are no fast logistics from China yet. And this is reflected in the delivery time of such parts as gearboxes, rear fenders, that is, those that are expensive to send by plane,” explained Ilya Plisov, a member of the board of the Union of Automotive Services.
The problem with parts for Chinese cars is also recognized in the Fit Service network of car service centers (which unites more than 300 service stations). “Chinese brands have just begun their development on the Russian market, so spare parts warehouses for cars are still being formed. Logistics has not yet been configured for “made to order” items. Thus, buying many parts is difficult, expensive and time-consuming,” explained Yaroslav Kukarin, head of the Fit Service body repair stations.
According to the Autostat agency, about 2 thousand dealership centers of Chinese brands are open in Russia. However, many brands are still not officially represented. As a result, unauthorized services face problems in their maintenance, which requires official equipment and remote access through codes.
Due to the lack of parts, Chinese cars have to be repaired using used parts. The share of such parts for cars of popular brands already reaches 40% of the total supply.
“Today, the majority of advertisements for the sale of spare parts for Chinese cars (93%) refer to the popular brands Chery, Geely and Haval in Russia,” says a representative of the Drom car buying and selling platform. Also, according to him, the production of analogue spare parts for Chinese cars is gradually being established in Russia and Belarus.
