Russian attack on hospital in Ukraine leaves two dead and 30 injured

Two people were killed and 30 others were injured in a Russian attack on a hospital in the city of Dnipro in eastern Ukraine today, Friday, according to what the Ukrainian Emergency Service announced. For their part, Russian officials accused Ukraine of targeting Mariupol with two long-range missiles and of bombing civilian targets in two regions of southern Russia, meanwhile the founder of Wagner announced. According to the Russian military, his group has been assigned to fight on a new front.

Video footage showed a destroyed building billowing of smoke as rescue workers searched. Much of the upper floor of what appeared to be a 3-storey building was damaged and a covered body was seen on a nearby road.

The governor of Dnipro said that two children were among the 30 wounded in the attack on the hospital (Anatolia)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as a crime against humanity, writing on Twitter: “Another (Russian) missile attack, another crime against humanity.”

He said a mental health clinic and a veterinary clinic had been damaged in Dnipro. “Only an evil country can hit clinics. There can be no military purpose behind this. It is pure Russian terrorism,” he said.

The governor of the Dnipro region, Serhiy Lysak, said that two children were among the injured, at a time when it was not possible to communicate with 3 people who are believed to have been in the building when the missile hit it.

For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that it carried out a raid during the night on Ukrainian ammunition depots, and confirmed – according to what was reported by the Russian Information Agency – that the bombing affected all the specified facilities.

In turn, the French Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as the Russian strikes that deliberately targeted civilian targets, including a hospital in Dnipro, and considered that these actions represent a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” and that they constitute “war crimes.”

Meanwhile, the founder of the Russian military company, “Wagner”, Yevgeny Prigozhin, stated that his forces were assigned to fight on a new front, and said, “The homeland needs to be defended, so we were assigned to fight on a new front,” without further details.

Ukrainian attacks

On the other hand, the pro-Russian local authorities in Donetsk Province said that the Ukrainian forces targeted the vicinity of the Azovstal factory in the city of Mariupol with two long-range missiles. According to the authorities, the bombing did not result in any damage.

And the channel of the Ukrainian city council of Mariupol, on its account on Telegram, published videos of thick smoke rising from the factory, which the Donetsk authorities say was targeted by Ukraine.

For his part, the governor of the Russian Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, announced that a number of border areas in the province were once again subjected to Ukrainian bombing, as he described it.

The Russian official referred to attempts to carry out attacks with marches on a number of regions.

This coincides with the announcement by the local authorities in Belgorod that they are studying legal options for arming the citizens of the province within the territorial defense units to protect the population.

In this regard, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the summoning of senior US diplomats, in protest against US statements regarding the attacks inside Russia.

And CNN quoted John Kirby, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, as saying that the Biden administration confirmed in its talks with Ukraine that it did not support attacks on Russian soil, indicating that it had obtained assurances from the Ukrainians that they would respect the American desire.

Kirby emphasized that the Biden administration does not want to use any American-made equipment to attack Russian territory.

Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart

On the other hand, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the United States is wrong in believing that its presence in the Atlantic Ocean will help it maintain its presence in the face of the threat of a third world war.

Lavrov also discussed with the Chinese envoy for Eurasian affairs, Li Hui, prospects for settling the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Lavrov highly appreciated, during the meeting with Li Hui, who is visiting the Russian capital, Beijing’s willingness to play a positive role in resolving the Ukrainian conflict.

Lavrov stressed Russia’s commitment to a diplomatic and political solution to the Ukrainian conflict, but pointed out to the Chinese envoy what he called the serious obstacles set by the Ukrainian side and its sponsors from Western countries to the resumption of peace talks.

On the other hand, Lavrov said that the United States is wrong in believing that its presence in the Atlantic Ocean will help it maintain its presence in the face of the danger of a third world war.

Putin is open to dialogue

In a related development, the Kremlin said today, Friday, that Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed in a phone call with his Brazilian counterpart Lula da Silva that Russia is open to dialogue on Ukraine.

Lula had previously tweeted that he had reiterated Brazil’s willingness to talk to both sides of the conflict in Ukraine.

Warning of freezing war

On the other hand, German Chancellor Olaf Schultz warned Russia against relying on freezing the war on Ukraine along the lands it occupied there.

He said in statements to the German newspaper “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” issued today, Friday, “Russia must understand that it cannot be a matter of making some kind of cold peace, for example by turning the current front line into a new “border” between Russia and Ukraine. “.

“This will not legitimize Putin’s campaign of land theft,” he stressed, adding that “it is more about a just peace, and the precondition for that is the withdrawal of Russian forces.”

F-16 fighters

Regarding the F-16 fighters, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said that Ukraine needs about 48 F-16 fighters to restore the territories occupied by Russia.

In this regard, two informed sources suggested that the Netherlands would send F-16 fighters to Ukraine after completing the training of Ukrainian pilots on these aircraft.

The two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that the Dutch government had led discussions with US officials over the past weeks to push US President Joe Biden to agree to deliver the planes to Ukraine.

Bloomberg News quoted one of the sources as saying that the Netherlands and Denmark are leading the allied countries to prepare pilots with the support of Britain and Belgium, and that the Dutch government is already looking, and discussing with its allies, about possible deployment plans for the planes.

The Netherlands currently owns 42 F-16 combat aircraft, including 24 aircraft currently used by the Dutch army, and cannot be sent to Ukraine until mid-2024, and the remaining fighters are to be sold to the American company “Draken International” for air services.

Nuclear warheads in Belarus

On the other hand, the European Union condemned today, Friday, the agreement between Russia and Belarus to deploy nuclear warheads in Belarusian territory, and considered that this plan would lead to further escalation and that it was extremely dangerous and contradicted with the commitments made by Russia in the Budapest Memorandum.

On Thursday, Russia pressed ahead with its plan to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, whose president said warheads were already on the way. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the plan in March.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said the decision violated many international agreements. He called on Russia to respect those commitments, and went on to say that “the regime in Belarus is complicit in Russia’s illegal and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine.”

Borrell called on Belarus to stop supporting the Russian war and to abandon decisions that will only lead to escalation of tensions in the region and undermining the sovereignty of Belarus. He said that any attempt to “escalate the situation further will be met with a strong and coordinated reaction.”
