Russian astronaut Oleg Kononenko has broken the record for the longest time in space (cumulatively). That record stood at 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes and 48 seconds. He crossed it this morning, during his fifth space mission.
The 59-year-old cosmonaut is on the International Space Station (ISS), where he traveled last September for a year-long mission. If he completes that mission, he will have broken the magical barrier of 1,000 days in space.
He has traveled to the ISS four times before: in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2019. With his time in space, he broke the record set by Russian Gennadi Padalka in 2015.

In an interview with Russian state news agency TASS, Kononenko said he became an astronaut “to do what I love, not to set records.” Still, he says he is proud of his achievements. “But I am even more proud that the record for the total duration of a person’s stay in space is still held by a Russian cosmonaut.”
The Russian says he does not yet know whether he will go into space a sixth time. “I don’t like to guess. I prefer to talk about the results that are there now.”
