The Russian army said, on Friday, that it had shot down a Ukrainian missile over the city of Taganrog in southern Russia, and that shrapnel from the missile wounded a number of civilians and damaged some buildings.
There was no immediate response from Ukraine, which rarely comments on attacks inside Russia or on territory under Moscow’s control.
Vasily Golubev, governor of Russia’s Rostov region near Ukraine and which includes the city of Taganrog, said a cafe and a museum had been hit, while windows in an apartment building were smashed.
He added that 9 people were taken to hospital with injuries, without any deaths.
Videos from the accident site circulated online showed a low-rise building with parts of it destroyed.
A second missile
Hours later, Russia announced that it had intercepted a second Ukrainian missile in the southwest of its territory, after the destruction of a first missile whose shrapnel fell in the city of Taganrog, injuring 15 people.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that “air defense systems intercepted a Ukrainian missile near the city of Azov in the Rostov region,” noting that the shrapnel fell this time “in a deserted area.”
In a separate context, there were reports of an explosion at an oil refinery in the Russian city of Samara.
Parliament member Alexander Khenstein said the explosion at a refinery owned by Rosneft appeared to have been caused by a bomb. “Fortunately, there were no major damages and no serious injuries,” he wrote on the Telegram platform.
The Tass news agency reported that a person believed to be responsible for the blast had been arrested.
Parts of Russia, especially near the border with Ukraine, have been bombed or attacked by drones during the 17-month-old war. Energy facilities and weapons depots have been frequent targets of attacks.
