MOSCOWRussia stated his troops had taken more advantageous positions near Avdiivka and Donetsk. It comes after President Vladimir Putin ordered the military to push further into Ukraine after two years of full-scale war.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had pushed back Ukrainian troops near Klishchiivka, Dleyevka and Kurdiumivka in the Donetsk region and taken up better positions near Avdiivka which fell to Russians earlier this month.

“In the Donetsk direction, units of the Southern Group of Forces improved the situation along the front line and defeated formations of the 22nd, 28th and 92nd mechanized brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the residential areas of Klishchiivka, Dleyevka and Kurdiumivka,” the Defense Ministry said Russia.

“In the Avdiivka direction, units of the Center group of forces occupied more advantageous lines and positions, and also defeated the manpower and equipment of the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the 107th Air Defense Brigade.”

The ministry said Russian forces had successfully repelled seven Ukrainian counterattacks in the region. A total of 77 Ukrainian drones were destroyed, the ministry said.

Reuters could not immediately verify battlefield reports from either side of the war.

Putin said on Tuesday that Russian troops would push further into Ukraine to build on their battlefield successes after the fall of the town of Avdiivka where he said Ukrainian troops were forced to flee in the chaos.

Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022, triggering a full-scale war after eight years of conflict in eastern Ukraine between Ukrainian troops on one side and pro-Russian Ukrainians and Russian proxies on the other.

Along the 1,000-km (600-mile) front line, Russian forces hide behind deep minefields and are patrolled by drones and guarded by heavy artillery.

Russia currently controls less than a fifth of the territory internationally recognized as Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he would not rest until every Russian soldier was expelled.

Russia says the territory its forces control is part of Russia and will never be handed over. Western countries have provided 250 billion euros ($271 billion) in aid to Ukraine in an effort to defeat Russian forces.
