Russian Armed Forces Advancing to Cut off Ukrainian Forces Near Bakhmut, Latest Report Shows

The Russian Armed Forces are seeking to cut off the logistics routes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Bakhmut (Artemovsk). Units of the Russian Armed Forces have advanced to the center of Novomikhailovka (southwest of Donetsk), the Institute for the Study of War (ISW, headquartered in Washington) notes on the evening of March 4 in its latest report on the situation on the Ukrainian front.

On the front in the “Luhansk region of Ukraine”, limited positional battles along the Kupyansk-Svatovo-Kremennaya line have continued over the past 24 hours; Washington observers based on geolocation maps have not recorded any confirmed changes on the front line in this area.

Ukrainian and Russian military sources reported continued fighting: northeast of Kupyansk in the Sinkovka area; southeast of Kupyansk in the Tabaevka area; west of Kremennaya in the Terna area; south of Kremennaya in the area of Belogorovka and Verkhnekamensky.

The Russian army, meanwhile, is trying to cut off the logistics lines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces passing to Ivanovsky from the north.

The Russian Armed Forces advanced to the center of Ivanovskoye (west of Bakhmut). In the western part of the village of Ivanovskoye, fighting continues.

Positional battles continue: northwest of Bakhmut in the Bogdanovka area; southwest of Bakhmut in the area of Kleshcheevka and Andreevka; south of Bakhmut in the area of the village of New York and Novoselovka.

Russian troops have advanced west of Avdeevka over the past 24 hours. Geolocation video published last Monday shows the Russians moving south of Orlovka, near the Orlovka-Tonenkoye road (west of Avdeevka), ISW analysts note.

Positional battles continued: west of Avdeevka in the area of Berdychi, Orlovka and Tonenky; southwest of Avdeevka in the area of Pervomaiskoye and Nevelskoye.

The Russian army has advanced southwest of Donetsk amid ongoing fighting to the west and southwest of the city – to the central part of Novomikhailovka (southwest of Donetsk). At the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces hold positions only in western Novomikhailovka.

Positional battles, according to Washington observers, took place west of Donetsk in the area of Krasnohorivka and Georgievka, as well as southwest of Donetsk in the Pobeda area.

In the west of the DPR and in the area of the administrative borders of the DPR and the Zaporozhye region of Russia on March 4, there were no confirmed changes in the front line. Fighting continues: in the western part of the DPR in the Vodyanoy area (northeast of Ugledar); on the administrative border of the DPR and the Zaporozhye region in the area of Prechistovka (southeast of Velikaya Novoselka) and Urozhaynaya (south of Velikaya Novoselka).

Positional battles are taking place in the west of the Zaporozhye region, near Rabotino and Verbovoy on the southern direction of the front. There were no confirmed changes on the front line in this area.

The Ukrainian defense line near Avdiivka consists of rudimentary earthen fortifications that are unable to hold back the onslaught of the Russian army, The New York Times reported last week. As evidence, satellite images of the territory taken by the commercial company Planet Labs are provided. It is noted that the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had enough time to prepare defensive lines near Avdievka – since 2014. Today, however, the defensive line consists of rudimentary fortifications, often with a connecting trench so that infantry can reach the nearest firing positions to the enemy – nothing more.
