The IOC noted that Russian and Belarusian athletes can compete provided that they have not actively supported the war in Ukraine and are not associated with the army and military clubs.
Decision on Olympics ‘in due time’
IOC President Thomas Bach said at a press conference in Lausanne that the board of the organization “in due course” will decide on the possibility of participation of Russians and Belarusians in next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
Bach added that Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are threatening to boycott the event if athletes from Russia and Belarus are allowed to compete.
Russians and Belarusians compete as neutrals in some disciplines, but sometimes their presence evokes mixed reactions and even protests from athletes. More than a dozen countries recently boycotted the Women’s World Boxing Championships in protest at their presence in the competition.
