Russian and Belarusian Athletes Allowed to Compete as Neutral Participants in Paris Olympics, but Banned from Equestrian Events

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided that Russians and Belarusians may take part in the Olympics in Paris next year, as neutral activists if they do not support Russia’s war against Ukraine.

But in equestrian sports, they will not be there because they have been banned from international competition since Russia started the war against Ukraine in 2022. Thus, they have not been able to get the necessary points in the qualifying competitions.

“Under the Olympic Equestrian Qualification System, individual places are secured through the FEI Olympic Ranking from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023. As Russians and Belarusians have not competed in FEI events since 2 March 2022, there will be no representation from these nations in the Olympics in Paris,” says the FEI in a statement obtained by the site Inside the games.

It is unclear in how many sports in Paris will it be possible for Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in. The International Association of Athletics Federations has decided not to allow the athletes of these nations to participate in the Olympics.
