Russian Ambassador to London Andrei Kelin was summoned to the British Foreign Office, where they stated that Moscow allegedly “continues to try to use cyber capabilities to interfere in democratic processes in the United Kingdom.”
Earlier, the British Foreign Office announced sanctions against two members of the hacker group Callisto, also known as Seaborgium, Star Blizzard and Cold River, allegedly associated with the FSB.
“The United Kingdom and its allies today (December 7) uncovered a series of attempts by Russian intelligence services to carry out cyber operations targeting senior individuals and organizations,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
As the document emphasizes, “the United Kingdom Government believes that this was done with the intention of using the information obtained to interfere in British politics and democratic processes.”
“The Foreign, Commonwealth and International Development Office has also summoned the Russian Ambassador to express deep concern about Russia’s ongoing attempts to use cyber capabilities to interfere with democratic processes in the United Kingdom and beyond,” the British Foreign Office said.
Earlier, the British newspaper Daily Mail claimed in its publication that hackers working for the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia “compromised the private conversations of senior politicians and civil servants” in “a constant attempt to interfere in British politics.” According to the publication, Russia allegedly persecuted hundreds of British MPs, civil servants and scientists during an eight-year campaign. Information about their conversations and correspondence fell into the hands of the FSB. The article claims that hackers associated with the FSB have successfully hacked emails and recorded conversations of high-ranking politicians and even ministers.
According to the newspaper, “Russian interference in the private lives of British politicians will only increase as the UK holds elections next year.” Russia will probably try to use the accumulated incriminating evidence, the Daily Mail insists.
