Russian Alexei Sarana wins the final European Chess Championship for the Russian Federation – Kommersant

Russian grandmaster Alexei Sarana became the winner of the European Chess Championship. He scored 8.5 points in 11 rounds. The European Championship in Serbia was the final one for Russia, since next year its chess players will play in the Asian Championship.

The second and third places were taken by Kirill Shevchenko (Romania) and Daniel Darda (Belgium). They also scored 8.5 points, but lost on additional indicators.

The International Chess Federation allows Russians to participate in international competitions only in a neutral status due to the deployment of Russian troops to Ukraine in February 2022. At the end of February 2023, the assembly of the Asian Chess Federation voted to include the Russian Chess Federation in the organization.
