/ world today news/ The Russian Navy plans to arm the modernized Akula submarines with Kalibr cruise missiles, RT reported on Saturday (March 26), citing a publication on the Diplomat website.
In December, the Russian army successfully experimented with launching the missiles from a diesel submarine, the online media recalls. And he notes that the technical capabilities of the Russian submarine fleet have clearly improved, as combat duty has doubled in recent years.
The recent launch of cruise missiles from the Rostov-on-Don submarine proved the high efficiency of this type of weapon, the Navy notes.
The most modern Russian Rostov-on-Don diesel submarine, Varshavyanka class (according to NATO classification – “Kilo”) is one of the quietest in the world and is designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship defense, the publication explains.
At the beginning of December this year, four Caliber cruise missiles were fired from this type of submarine in the Mediterranean Sea against targets in Syria, near the city of Raqqa. Caliber is a supersonic cruise missile, with variations for surface, anti-ship and anti-submarine defense.
As for the “Shark” submarines, five of them are in the composition of the Pacific Fleet, and another six – in the composition of the Northern Fleet.
Last year, Russia announced its intention to modernize 12 nuclear submarines by 2020. Two of the Akula-class submarines, Kuzbass and Magadan, are currently at the Zvezda plant in the Far Eastern city of Bolshoy Kamen, and repair work should extend their life by 20 years, Diplomat writes.
