Russian airstrike injures 21 in Kharkiv, Ukraine

Jarkov. A Russian attack on residential buildings in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, on Saturday night left 21 people injured, including three minors between the ages of 8 and 17, the regional governor announced on Sunday.

“Twenty-one people were injured, including three children, a 17-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl,” Oleg Synegubov said on Telegram.

In addition, eight people were hospitalized, two of them in serious condition, he added.

Kharkiv, in northwestern Ukraine, is a city very close to the Russian border and had 1.4 million inhabitants before the war, which began more than two years ago with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russia “attacked a residential building with aerial bombs,” denounced Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky on social networks.

At night, rescuers with flashlights carried out search work in the rubble of one of the buildings hit, an AFP journalist at the scene confirmed.

“We were sleeping. [El edificio] It just exploded. “It’s terrible, it’s in ruins,” Oleksandra Ivanivna told AFP.

The explosion blew out the building’s windows and left large holes in some walls. Outside, some cars were crushed by falling tree branches and others charred.

According to Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terejov, who went to the scene of the attack, “there were no military personnel” in the building.

“Every day, every night, Kharkiv is attacked,” he lamented.

The bombing came hours after Russia killed five people, including two children, in central Ukraine.

The weekend attacks come ahead of a visit by President Volodymir Zelensky to the United States, where he plans to present a plan to end the war and pressure Western allies to allow him the use of long-range weapons against objectives within Russia.

“We need to strengthen our capabilities to protect lives and ensure security. Ukraine needs full long-range capabilities,” he said this Sunday.

“We are working to convince our allies. We will continue these discussions next week,” he added.
