London –
A number of fighter jets English and German intercepted a military aircraft Russia detected airborne in close airspace Estonia. The intercept was a joint mission NATO which came after the Russian military aircraft failed to communicate with air traffic operators in Estonia.
As reported CNN and The IndependentWednesday (15/3/2023), the British Ministry of Defense revealed that two Typhoon fighter jets owned by Britain and Germany were deployed on Tuesday (14/3) local time to intercept and escort an IL78 Midas aircraft, the type of air-to-air refueler belonging to Russia.
The Russian military aircraft was said to have failed to respond to communications made by Estonian Air Traffic Control (ATC) operators.
It also stated that the Russian military aircraft was airborne on the St Petersburg-Kaliningrad route, which is a Russian enclave located between Poland and Lithuania, along the Baltic Sea.
The incident occurred as Britain was preparing to take over leadership of the NATO mission in Estonia from Germany. Estonia which is also a member of NATO is known to have a border with Russia.
In its statement, the British Ministry of Defense emphasized that such missions were “routine”, but came at a time when tensions were rising between Western countries and Russia over invasion of Ukraine.
