An unknown number of people died in Russian air strikes in Ukraine in the night from Sunday to Monday, the government in Kyiv reports. Russia has stepped up its bombings in the run-up to a Russian holiday.
At least five people were injured, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said. There would be damage to a fuel storage facility, buildings, infrastructure and cars.
Damage is also reported in various other cities, such as the port of Odesa. The Ukrainian army reports that all drones used in the bombing have been shot down.
Russia celebrates Victory Day on Tuesday, which commemorates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. President Vladimir Putin uses the holiday for national unity. He also wants to show the Russian military power with a parade on the Red Square in Moscow.
Military experts suspect that Putin wants to show on the holiday that his country has the situation in Ukraine under control. That is why the bombing would have been scaled up.
