Russian air defenses shot down five objects overnight, which the authorities said were Ukrainian balloons, the Ministry of Defense announced in Moscow today, as reported by the Associated Press and BTA. This comes as both warring sides continue to fire long-term strikes as part of a war of abuses, the group noted.
Neither Russian nor Ukrainian officials have provided details about the mysterious balloons that Russian officials and the media have reported seeing over the battlefield in recent weeks. The Ukrainian military has been innovating since the war began in February 2022, adapting drones for wider use against the Kremlin’s larger forces.
According to Russian news agencies, the Ukrainian balloons are equipped with a jeep model and carry explosives. They are said to be harder to detect and can carry a larger payload than smaller drones. It is not yet clear if they are filled with helium or hot air, or if they are another type of balloon.
Balloons cannot move in the air. The Jeepsy module will likely be used to coordinate the release of explosives if the balloon passes over a certain area, with the aim of causing panic on the ground and deceiving Russian air defenses .
Three Ukrainian balloons and a drone were shot down over the Voronezh region, which borders the Luhansk oblast in Ukraine. Two more balloons were intercepted over Russia’s Belgorod region, near Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
In addition to the balloons, Russia said it had intercepted two Ukrainian tactical missiles, 19 rockets fired from multiple launch launchers and 16 drones overnight.
The Ministry of Defense also said that three drones were shot down over the Rostov region in southern Russia.
The balloons intercepted by the Russian air defense earlier this week in the Lipetsk and Kursk regions were carrying mines, Russian news agencies said.
Ukraine has begun to increasingly build Russian military bases and infrastructure far inside Russia.
Kiev also announced that they had shot down the 13 Shahed drones sent by Russia overnight.
A new suspicious drone has been spotted flying over the Mihail Coglunicanu Air Force Base in Romania
A new suspicious drone was discovered by the army near the Romanian military base “Mihail Koglunicanu” in Constanta County, reports Digi24 and notes that this is the second such case in recent days . On Monday (April 15), drones were seen circling over the base. Military experts do not rule out the possibility that the drones were spying.
According to the original information, it is a small civilian drone that was built near Mihail Koglunicanu Airport. Military radars detected the flying object but did not touch it as the drone was shot down after a few minutes.
The military sent a new notification to the prosecutor’s office after three civilian drones were found on Monday near the military base, where it is forbidden to fly such equipment.
