Russian dictator Vladimir Putin believes that he can recover “historical Russian lands” and restore the empire by disrupting the global balance, which means that several countries – including Latvia – must prepare for possible Russian aggression, warned Oleksandrs Litvinenko, head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Similar news from the Ukrainian side has come out before. Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelenskiy announced in October that Russia is considering freezing the war against Ukraine in order to restore its destroyed military potential and start a war against the Baltic states within the next five years.
“As always, I will be frank with you. Russia is currently considering various scenarios for the coming years. One of them is particularly dangerous. If there is any pause in this aggression against Ukraine – any freezing of the situation – a new critical moment will occur,” he said.
If Russia manages to re-concentrate its forces during this pause, it would be dangerous for the Baltics. “Besides Ukraine, it is definitely the Baltic countries and definitely the countries that have Russia [militārie] contingents. This is accurate information from our intelligence service,” he said.
The head of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Litvinenko, published an article last week outlining the idea in more detail.
