Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
The group of seven countries with the largest economies (G7) warn Russia will have big consequences if it really attacks Ukraine.
The statement was made by the G7 through a joint statement after its members, namely United States of America, England, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan will meet in Liverpool on Sunday (12/12).
“Russia should have no doubts about the grave consequences and other responses if there is further military aggression against Ukraine,” the G7 statement was quoted as saying. Reuters.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the right of a sovereign state to determine its own future.”
The G7 also condemned Russia’s continued military deployments near the Ukrainian border. The group called on Moscow to stop all actions that stoke further tensions.
“We call on Russia to reduce tensions, use diplomatic channels and comply with international commitments regarding the transparency of military activities,” the G7 continued.
Not only that, the group of developed countries, continues to reaffirm support for the efforts of France and Germany in the Normandy Format. The effort was set up to achieve the full implementation of the Minsk Agreement as a solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine which is still volatile between Kiev forces and pro-Russian rebels.
Before the G7 statement emerged, the Russian Embassy in London, said Britain’s use of the phrase “Russian aggression” during the G7 meeting in Liverpool was misleading.
This, he said, was deliberately designed to create a reason for the G7 to come together and make mutual agreements.
According to the Russian Embassy, it has made numerous offers to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on how to reduce tensions.
“The G7 forum could be an opportunity to discuss it, but so far we have heard nothing but aggressive slogans,” the embassy statement said on Saturday (11/12).
The following day, Russian President Vladimir Putin told US President Joe Biden that Russian troops did not pose a threat.
To Biden, Putin found it strange that Russia was hated just for moving troops in its own territory.
Biden and Putin are said to be holding further talks regarding the conflict in Ukraine in the near future.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there were very serious conceptual differences between Russia and the United States regarding Moscow’s border areas.
On the other hand, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said Russia could not use its influence over Ukraine.
“That’s what Russia wants to emphasize and if we let it go with impunity, then the whole system that provides stability, prevents war, is in jeopardy,” he told NBC News in a post-summit interview.
Russia’s dispute with the US and Cs was triggered by a conflict on the Ukrainian border. Western countries accuse Russia of continuing to deploy troops in the border region as part of a plan to invade Ukraine.
US intelligence earlier also predicted that Russia might be planning a multi-troop attack involving up to 175,000 troops in Ukraine in early 2022.
But the Kremlin vehemently denied the planned attack. They even accused the West of suffering from Russophobia and triggering tensions in the region.
On the other hand, Putin has criticized NATO’s military expansion in European countries bordering Russia. Moscow says this threatens Russia and violates the security guarantees that NATO promised when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
