Russia will not nominate any films for the Oscars

The Russian Film Academy announced last night on Monday that no Russian film will be nominated for the Oscars This year, as the United States and Russia are going through one of the worst crises in their history, since the start of … Russia’s war on Ukraine last February.

The Academy said in a statement that it had decided not to choose Russian films and to send them to compete at the 2023 Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category.

The head of the committee in charge of sending Russian films to the Academy of the Oscars, Pavel Chukhrai, denounced the decision made “without his knowledge” this morning, Tuesday, and announced his resignation.

On Monday, director Nikita Mikhalkov, a leading figure in Russian cinema and supporter of President Vladimir Putin’s regime, found Russia’s participation in the Oscar competition unnecessary.

“I think choosing a film that represents Russia in a country that currently denies the existence of Russia makes no sense,” he told Russian news agency TASS.

Mikhalkov recalled that he had proposed to create a “Eurasian” competition equivalent to the American Oscars and that his project was in preparation.

76-year-old Nikita Mikhalkov, who comes from a famous family of artists, won the Oscar for best foreign film in 1995 for his Stalinist film “Brent by the Sun”.
