This is the conclusion of a National Intelligence Council periodic report that assesses global trends every four years that could affect U.S. security over the next 20 years.
“In the coming years and decades, the world will face new, sharper challenges. These include diseases, climate change, and the impact of new technologies, and financial crises,” the Global Trends 2040 report said.
Russia is described as a growing revisionist force that, like China, is trying to change the existing international order, which has emerged mainly under Western influence. Moscow is striving for traditional values and is trying not to interfere in its internal affairs, as well as to establish its “protectorate” in most of Eurasia.
Russia will continue to have large conventional armed forces, weapons of mass destruction, energy and mineral resources. The authors of the report also predict that Russia’s desire to influence the processes abroad and the formation of power structures both in the former USSR and far beyond its borders will not disappear anywhere.
Russia will continue to use the means of information warfare to sow discord between Western countries, the authors warn.
Russia is also expected to continue its expansion in Africa, the Middle East and other regions. Moscow will also increase its economic and military presence in the Arctic, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by global warming in the northern territories.
