Russia – Will call Putin “ruler”

According to several Russian state-controlled media, the Kremlin-friendly Liberal Democratic Party has put forward a proposal to change the title of President Vladimir Putin.

Instead of “president”, the party proposes to refer to him with the Russian word “pravitel”, which means “ruler”.

“More understandable”

According to Newsweek, which quotes Russian media, the proposal is justified by the fact that the word “president” is humiliating for Russia. It is pointed out that it was the Americans who first used the title at the end of the 18th century.

– Words like “ruler” or “head of state” are more understandable to Russian ears, the party believes according to Newsweek.

According to the news magazine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reports that President Putin “has not taken a position on the proposal”.

Nationalists

Despite the misleading name, the Russian Liberal Democratic Party is firmly rooted in the outer right wing of Russian politics.

The party was strongly centered around its longtime leader, the controversial ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovskywho died of complications after covid-19 in early April this year.

Controversial figure

He has also marked himself with a number of controversial proposals, including that Russia should take Alaska back from the United States with power, and that Russia should not let go atomic bomb on the house of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

In a speech in 2017, he threatened to “drive to the Kremlin and shoot and hang” his political opponents, according to the independent Russian newspaper Moscow Times.
