Russia has welcomed today for the new US government’s decision to close the US International Development Agency (USAID), which Moscow considers to be a “intervention machine” in state affairs. At the same time, WikiLeaks reports that USAID has funded 6,200 journalists internationally.
“The only thing we are pleased with is that everything we have said has proved,” Russian spokesman Maria Zaharova said, referring to her country’s numerous criticism of this service.
Russia expelled USAID from its territory in 2012, accusing it of funding opposition protests against the Kremlin and its involvement in the elections.
She also accuses her of supporting anti -government movements in neighboring states, mainly in Ukraine and agriculture, to cause government authorities to fall and arriving at the power of persons more friendly to Washington and more hostile to Russia.
This service “is everything besides the help, development and help service. It is an intervention machine in internal affairs, a mechanism of changing regimes, political order, state structure, ”Zaharova said.
The US Service announced on Wednesday that all of its staff will be put on administrative leave on Friday, including staff abroad.
In the wake, the US service was under the responsibility of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
USAID was created in 1961 by law of the American Congress. It manages a budget of over $ 40 billion, intended for humanitarian aid and development aid in the world. It employs about 10,000 people, two -thirds of whom serve abroad.
