Speaking at a press conference in Vientiane, Laos, Lavrov stressed that despite rising tensions, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which closely monitors activities nuclear Iran, has reported signs of militarism in the Islamic republic’s nuclear program.
“We prefer to be guided by facts. In almost every country, there are politicians and members of parliament who express positions that do not reflect the practical strategy or real policies of their governments. “We’ve seen this many times before,” he said.
He stressed, “If there are plans or threats to attack the peaceful nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, it would indeed be a serious incentive.”
This week, Iran’s parliament suggested that the country could consider withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), in anticipation of a possible missile attack by Israel.
Israel continues its air and ground attacks on Lebanon, and continues to destroy Gaza.
Last week, Iran launched missiles at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised that Iran will “pay for the attack.”
At the same time, responding to statements by some Ukrainian officials about possible peace talks with Russia, Lavrov said that Moscow had not seen any real proposals.
When asked about the outcome of the 19th East Asia Summit, Lavrov said that a final declaration could not be accepted due to the efforts of Western countries to politicize it by including criticism of Russia and China.
Lavrov also criticized Japan for its recent steps towards rearmament, as well as US efforts to create a controversial alliance in Asia aimed at containing China, bringing its – into the field of economy.
